About LBIC

Lund University Bioimaging Centre (LBIC) is Lund University’s central infrastructure for advanced bioimaging and translational imaging research within the Faculty of Medicine. Established in 2008, LBIC provides researchers with access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies and multidisciplinary expertise spanning biological scales from molecules and cells to whole organisms and humans.

LBIC is currently organized into four interconnected platforms. Our platforms combine cutting-edge instrumentation with expertise in microscopy, medical physics, preclinical and clinical medicine, biology, engineering and image analysis. Our dedicated staff scientists support researchers throughout the entire imaging workflow, from project planning, experimental design and sample preparation to image acquisition, data management, analysis and visualization. We also provide training, workshops and seminars to support the development of imaging expertise within the research community.

LBIC serves basic and clinical research groups at Lund University and Region Skåne, as well as external academic and industry partners. Our four platforms provide a unique translational imaging environment, offering complementary technologies, including: 

  • Advanced light and electron microscopy
  • PET/SPECT, µCT, preclinical MRI
  • Clinical MRI, ultra-low-field portable MRI
  • Ultra-high-field 7T MRI
  • Advanced image analysis and visualization capabilities

By enabling integrated multimodal imaging workflows, LBIC supports research addressing complex biological questions across fields such as neuroscience, cancer biology, regenerative medicine, precision medicine, infection biology and developmental biology. Emerging capabilities in spatial omics imaging, AI-assisted image analysis and multimodal data integration further strengthen our ability to uncover disease mechanisms, identify biomarkers and accelerate scientific discoveries and clinical translation.

Mission

LBIC’s mission is to provide access to advanced bioimaging technologies and expertise, enabling innovative research and supporting scientific breakthroughs. As stated in the working procedures for the Faculty of Medicine (2012):

"LBIC is a centre under the faculty board with the task to be an infrastructural platform for human and animal experimental imaging for users at Lund University, with a national and international openness."

Through our technologies, expertise and collaborative approach, we aim to make cutting-edge bioimaging accessible and empower researchers to address the most challenging questions in biomedical science.
