Course description

Background
Bio-imaging is a rapidly advancing field of research with a unique potential brought forward by two major non-invasive techniques: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which comprises a variety of tools ranging from high-resolution anatomical structure visualization to functional studies and even molecular-level description of metabolic events in the cell; and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which provide a unique means for high-sensitivity studies of physiological function and of low concentrations of molecular bio-distribution. Among other important techniques for Bioimaging on the “macroscopic” length scale are SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and CT (X-ray Computed Tomography), while on the “microscopic” length scale the Electron Microscope is a research instrument with increasing importance. In addition, preclinical as well as clinical bioimaging is in a fast development phase towards the use of combined modalities in order to add value beyond what are possible using separate imaging techniques.

This graduate course aims to give PhD students, post-docs, researchers and others theoretical and practical experiences of preclinical imaging modalities mentioned above, all available at Lund University Bioimaging Center, LBIC.

Course requirements
No special requirements.

Examination
4,5 first ECTS: 80% presence on lectures representative in all modalities and 100% participation on demonstrations. Case studies in groups with oral presentation as examination.

Last 4,5 ECTS: own project from own or interested research (hands-on using LBIC instruments) or theoretical project/case: individually written and oral presentation.
